In the late Mesolithic, in the Portuguese terri-tory, significant changes occurred in the settlement patterns of local populations mo-ving from coastal to more inland areas in sta-ble river basins such as the Tagus and Sado estuaries, resulting in the formation of large shell middens. One of the best known are the Muge shell middens with evidence of more than 300 human burials. In this presentation these burial practices will be approached through the lens of human skeletal remains recovered in recent archaeological work ca-rried out at the Cabeço da Amoreira shell midden. The bioanthropological characteriza-tion of these osteological materials will allow us to have a more accurate picture of the basic parameters of the life and death of these late Mesolithic populations.
